On June 16th, 2012, The Jack London Bar hosted their First Anniversary Party. The party was well attended, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres were served (the mini-corn dogs were to DIE for!)
Terry who manages the establishment as well as The Rialto Poolroom held an awards ceremony, and presented noteworthy individuals with a Golden Wolfie – something as esteemed as an Oscar or an Emmy or one of those weird MTV awards. Only MORE Kick-Ass; more gooder.
orhistory.com’s Resident Historian was quite honored to receive a Golden Wolfie, as can be seen in the accompanying photo. It was a wonderful evening, with plenty of champagne to go around. The Golden Wolfie was displayed prominently at the Resident Historian’s table, along with some shots of bourbon (George Dickel or HRD, we never were really sure). The Award was bestowed for our outstanding service and dedication to Oregon History, for our commitment to The Jack London Bar, and for our ability to present history in an accessible, enjoyable, and dare I say, “fun” manner. Terry said quite a few more kind words, but I have to admit that I was a bit fuckered up and don’t remember much else (but she DID talk about Danford Balch! Any Award speech with the words “Danford Balch” in it MUST be Kick-Ass!)
It was such an acknowledgment of what we do at orhistory.com, to receive this award. So many times in blogging or podcasting, you spend so much energy and effort on your craft, researching and writing and editing and honing – and then you just throw it out there, toss it onto the interwebs like the proverbial sausage down the hall. It is so nice to get some feedback, some thankful or encouraging words from listeners now and again, and it makes it all worth while. While never, ever, ever expecting an acknowledgment such as the Golden Wolfie, when it does come through, it is such a wonderful feeling. Thank you Terry, Cari and The Jack London Bar!
The day after receiving this stupendous gift was Father’s Day. I like to take my children out to see the splendors of Oregon on that day, and to say thanks to our own Daddy, Dr. John McLoughlin – The Father of Oregon. I decided to take the Golden Wolfie along with us, and I took some pictures of the Wolf enjoying some of the historic and natural beauties of our beautiful state. Some of the photos are featured below, and of course you can see the full gallery by clicking on this link right here to the Facebook Machine Gallery.
Again, I want to thank The Jack London Bar for this award, and I want to thank them for allowing us to bring our Live version of Kick-Ass Oregon History to that most esteemed of Portland bars. It is a wonderful association, one that we are quite proud of, and one that I want to nurture and grow over the next many years.
And now, more Golden Wolfie shots! It’s #AwardPorn!!!
