February 14th is Oregon’s 156th Birthday – and do we have some doozies of some parties planned for you this year… in Oregon’s Oldest City – Astoria!!
To start things off – our friend Matthew Cowan at the Oregon Historical Society has lined up the Liberty Theater as a venue for a special Friday Night (2/13) display of some awesome slides. Of the glass variety. The program displays a pictorial history of Oregon, and the Resident Historian will read the original 1935(?) script that accompanied the presentation. It starts at 7:00pm, and it is FREE! An event NOT to be missed!
Saturday morning at 10am finds us at Fort Stevens State Park, hosting our Oregon in World War Two Field Trip! We will tour some rad gun batteries, see a CRAZY Oregon diorama or three at the museum there, and talk about Oregon’s unique role as the most shelled and bombed state in that conflict. The cost is only $15 (plus OR State Park Admission), and we’ll serve coffee and a pastry!
Then Saturday night at 7:30pm, we’ll be at the Merry Time Bar (995 Marine Drive, Astoria, OR 97103), holding our Oregon’s Birthday Party!! That event will be FREE, and we will be announcing the winner of our 4th Annual Kick Ass Oregon History Diorama Contest (you should enter!) We will check out dioramas, have some cake, and hear a unique story about a peculiar skull… that was stolen from Oregon!
So come out to the coast, and join us in celebrating just how fucking rad Oregon really is!
Oh – and if you can’t make Astoria, we’ll be back in Portland on Sunday afternoon for our Portland’s Sinful Past: Shanghaiers, Saloons and Skullduggery walking tour! It’s only $15!!
