100 to 1. The Cost of the Free Podcast.

Hey there Ass Kickers! Thought you might enjoy a little “behind the scenes.” A touch of “this is how we make the podcasts.”

As you are likely aware, Andy and I have been churning out these little productions you know as Kick Ass Oregon History for about 4 years now. Productions that we post on the interwebs for free. Yes – Free! We absolutely enjoy creating these broadcasts -and it is certainly a labor of love. We love it! But there IS labor involved. And, well… it’s not really free (for us).

Take the recent Pi(e) Day episode. Time is money, right? Believe it or not, I spent about 40 hours researching, writing and interviewing for that broadcast. Andy spent about 8 to 10 hours recording and editing. Let’s not begin to put our Day Job hourly rates for labor in there, or yours for comparrison sake, but you get the idea… Doing some simple math, and comparing other broadcasts we have done, it’s about 100 minutes of research/writing/recording/editing for each finished minute of podcast.TriMet

But there was a real monetary cost involved in the pi(e) podcast as well. Part of my research involved consulting documents at TriMet about the public art and the fucked up pi in the Washington Park Station. Some documents were in the TriMet Archives about the selection process for the project, and there was a fee of $19.03 to pull the records. I also took Andrea Damewood out for coffee and pie at Lauretta Jeans for an interview for the episode (about $15.00, plus 20% – because I tip service folks!!).

Just take a moment to consider that. About 50 hours time. $37.03 in cold, hard cash. All for a silly little podcast about pi(e).

The thing is – we’re not just throwing a USB mic in the middle of the room and recording our thoughts on the movie we saw last night or the Blazers game that we watched or the current “Blob Squatch” youtube of the week. And I’m not dissing on those types of podcasts. Not. At. All. I listen to many that are just like that. But I think regular listeners of our ‘cast know that we put in a shit ton of research and writing time – to bring you the straight shit about Oregon’s past. We enjoy doing it. We think you like what you listen to.

So how about it? Want to throw us a few bucks?

Last year we held a crowd funding campaign to raise the dough to travel to the SE corner of the state. It was amazing. We surpassed our goal of $4,000 in 18 days. 44 people gave to that project, and we were able to cover our expenses and made 7 podcasts about parts of Oregon that we haven’t brought to you before. We found new stories that we hadn’t heard before. And we squished and mushed those stories into little productions that we pushed over Al Gore’s Internet and slipped them right into your earholes.

Of our thousands of listeners and downloaders, 44 of you gave to our SE Oregon Road Trip. We thank you tremendously! People throw this phrase out all the time – but believe me when I say “we couldn’t have done it with out you!” If you gave, you see what we did with the money you kindly parted with. No expectation at all, but do you care pass on  another dollar or two? And if you are one of the thousands of downloaders who didn’t give – here’s your chance now! I know it sounds dumb, but a dollar or two is really all we’re hoping for. How about it?

Cause those TriMet records don’t come fo’ free!
