An Open Letter to the Oregon Statuary Hall Commission

By oregonhistorian · On October 3, 2014

NOTE: If you are unfamiliar with the topic, please see this excellent article by Carol McAlice Currie of Salem’s Statesman Journal.

Dear Kerry Tymchuk, Executive Director of the Oregon Historical Society, and other members of the Committee,Dr John

We at Kick Ass Oregon History are absolutely for keeping Dr. John McLoughlin as a representative of Oregon in the National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington DC. No other person did so much to help establish this beautiful beaver state. And as much as the Good Reverend Beaver may disagree, Dr. John should still be an inspiration to all Oregonians, indeed to all who may visit the Statuary Hall.

Our vote for Jason Lee? A solid, resounding… “meh…”

We are UNQUESTIONABLY open to bringing in true, awe-inspiring Oregonians from typically underrepresented* communities. We hope you will consider many options that are quality Oregonians who, as the 1864 proposal for the Hall states, are “illustrious for their historic renown or for distinguished civic or military services.”

Thank You for making sure  Oregon’s national representation Stays appropriately Historic, And indeed, Kick Ass!

-Doug and Andy

*Bethenia Owens-Adair’s stance on sterilizing homosexuals and other “degenerates,” much like Governor Oswald West’s position, is particularly troubling to us, and we feel that she (they) should not be commemorated in this manner.
